Blue screens can occur for many reasons whether it be a hardware malfunction of a software virus that has infected your system. A blue screen of death usually requires technical intervention from a computer repair technician but not always. You can try several things before calling a computer repair company. After a computer crash and prior to loading Windows, a menu appears stating that your computer was not shut down properly and the computer gives you options to load the system. There is an option towards the top allowing you to boot your computer in "Safe Mode" which loads the operating system with minimum drivers - just enough to get the system going. The theory behind this is if a hardware driver is causing the blue screen, booting in safe mode omits loading the driver in hopes of successfully loading the system. If the blue screen remains, a computer repair tech can diagnose the issue and determine whether you have a hardware or software malfunction. For hardware issues, the hardware in question would need to be replaced. For software, the operating system would need to be re-installed. Most of the time, data can be recovered from the drive. If you need important data that was on your computer prior to the crash, make sure to let the technician know because once a new operating system is installed, all previous data on the drive will be lost.
